Mets player Jeurys Familia arrested for domestic violence

Police have arrested 27-year-old New York Mets pitcher and All-Star player Jeurys Familia, who less than a month ago starred in an anti-domestic violence video campaign, for domestic violence.

According to an arrest record obtained by the Record and NorthJersey.com, law enforcement wrote in a criminal complaint that Familia caused "bodily injury to another" in Fort Lee, New Jersey on Monday. Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul did not provide a detailed accounting of the incident, saying only that police responded to a call for assistance at 2:22 a.m. Eastern that day.

Authorities have charged Familia with simple assault, a disorderly persons offense. Disorderly persons offenses are a type criminal complaint heard in New Jersey municipal court with "less restrictive punishments upon conviction" and a maximum six months' jail term, according to the New Jersey Courts website.

On Oct. 7, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence's #NotAFan campaign released a video starring Familia, in which he said "I am not a fan of domestic violence" in Spanish.
