Republican nominee Donald Trump has won Iowa, according to early election results.

Iowa has been a true battleground state in the 2016 election. Trump has held on to a steady lead in the polls in the Hawkeye State. A Seltzer & Company poll conducted from Nov. 1-4 put him up by seven percentage points.

Trump appeared at a rally in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 28 just as news came to light of a possible renewed investigation into Clinton's email scandal — this time involving top aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, former congressman Anthony Weiner. Trump called the latest development "the biggest political scandal since Watergate," according to the Des Moines Register.

A RealClearPolitics average of national polls just a week before the election showed a close race in Iowa, with Trump ahead by just 1.7 percentage points.

Iowa has six electoral votes.
