'Mic''s Gabe Gonzalez sums up why his US citizen mom can't vote in this election

Impact

Mic news correspondent Gabe Gonzalez's mother is a tax paying citizen of the United States who isn't allowed to vote in the 2016 presidential election.

Although Gonzalez's mother, Ingrid, voted in the 2012 election, she's since moved from Florida to Puerto Rico which, despite being an import and export tax-paying U.S. territory, isn't allowed a say in who assumes the nation's highest office.

In a Mic video op-ed, Gonzalez explains how, despite paying $3.3 billion in federal taxes in 2011 — roughly the same amount that Vermont paid that year — Puerto Ricans still lack the voting privileges afforded to mainland citizens.
