Blizzard just unveiled major 'Diablo 3' news at BlizzCon 2016

Impact

Diablo is going to be re-created — as in players can effectively play the original game — within Diablo 3, as a location players can visit.

As BlizzCon is a celebration of all things Blizzard, there are of course surprises for all of Blizzard's major franchises. The Diablo 3 news revealed at Blizzcon 2016, however, was saved for last and for good reason.

For original Diablo fans, the news must sound like heaven. The dungeon-crawler game genre might not exist without Diablo 1. It's a revered part of game culture. And Diablo III players are getting it for free.

Blizzard/Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

The recreation of Diablo within Diablo 3 is very faithful.

Frank Pearce, chief development officer for Blizzard, took the stage at BlizzCon 2016 to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the original Diablo by announcing its recreation within Diablo III.

Pearce told the audience that special filters were designed for the Diablo recreation to replicate the grainy, pixelated graphics that players saw on computer monitors back in 1996. Character movement will also be locked to eight directions, as players didn't have 360 degrees of movement back in 1996 either.

Blizzard says to create a fresh Diablo 3 character for the Diablo patch.

The Diablo patch will be available on the Public Test Realm next week. Pearce told the audience that even though the Diablo recreation will be available to all characters on a player's account, the best way to experience the new Diablo was to start a new character.
