Two officers from the New York Police Department were shot Friday, allegedly by Manuel Rosales, the "heavily armed suspect" of a robbery in the Bronx borough of New York City, the New York Daily News reported. Both parties exchanged fire, leaving one of the officers and Rosales dead.

J. Peter Donald, the NYPD's assistant commissioner for communication and public information, announced the news in a tweet at 3:46 p.m. Eastern and confirmed the suspect had been "struck" in the shootout.

According to WCBS, the officers were responding to a home invasion complaint in the Bronx's Van Nest neighborhood.

Both officers were sergeants; the one who died was shot in the head and the other was shot in the leg before being rushed to a hospital, an NYPD source told WNBC.
