1 dead, multiple people shot near Azusa, California, polling location

Police responded to an active shooter near a polling place in Azusa, California, Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Times reported. At least one person was reported killed. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Scroggin said police were there is at least one suspect, who is heavily armed.

"This is a very volatile and critical situation," Officer Jerry Willison of the Azusa Police Department said, according to the Times. The shooting occurred sometime after 2 p.m. 

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said they were treating four patients.

The Azusa Union School District issued a lockdown for two nearby schools. A preschool and daycare center were also placed on lockdown. 

Dean Logan, the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, urged voters to avoid the area. He said two polling stations would be affected by the shooter situation, though he did not say shots were fired in those locations.
