Trump vs. Clinton: Battleground states take center stage as election's end draws near

Impact

As 24 of the states — nearly half — have been projected, Republican Donald Trump has clinched 128 electoral votes to Democrat Hillary Clinton's 97.

Thus far, no major surprises have emerged, with historically red and blue states voting as predicted. Republican state Texas, one of the states with the most electoral votes at 39, has played a substantial role in Trump's favorable numbers.

The incoming results have emphasized the importance of 11 important battleground states — Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin — all of which have been too close to call thus far.

Florida, worth 29 electoral votes, Pennsylvania, worth 20, and Ohio, worth 18, remain the three weightiest of the undeclared swing states.

Both candidates have spent enormous resources and time in key states, particularly Florida, the incoming results of which have been consistently pendular.

The final outcome of the presidential election will in large part be determined by the votes cast in these 11 states.
