'Dead of Summer' Season 2 Cancelled: 1970 Deb prequel canned at Freeform

Dead of Summer is dead at Freeform.

The former ABC Family's anthology series reportedly would have set its second season in 1970, a contrast to the first season's 1980s-set story. The plot would have followed Deb (played by Elizabeth Mitchell) during her stint as a counselor at the series' Camp Stillwater.

Unfortunately for Deb, the series' ratings just weren't enough to earn a second season on Freeform. The network announced the cancellation Tuesday night.

Creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis were inspired by Fargo, FX's own anthology series that sets its action in different time periods to build an overarching narrative. Dead of Summer would have done the same, with a third season to be set in the early 2000s.

Unfortunately, Horowitz and Kitsis won't get the chance. The two creators will continue to work on ABC's Once Upon a Time, which is currently in its sixth season.
