We still haven’t gotten a ‘Deadpool’ sequel, but Fox already has big plans for Deadpool 3

Culture

At a time when Donald Trump just became the next president of the United States, we must take solace in small victories. Remember how awesome the fourth-wall-breaking, gory trainwreck Deadpool was?

Deadpool, and its star Ryan Reynolds, was a refreshing change of pace for the tiresome and repetitive superhero genre in 2016 — and it was clear that's exactly what fans wanted. The film became the highest grossing rated-R movie ever made. Naturally, then, 20th Century Fox is working on a sequel with a new director in mind: John Wick's David Leitch.

But before the Deadpool sequel has even started production — Leitch isn't officially on board yet — Fox is confident enough in the franchise that it's set exciting aspirations for a third Deadpool movie. Per the Hollywood Reporter, the studio is already eyeing a new storyline "that will involve another X-team, X-Force."

For comic book fans familiar with X-Force, this is pretty exciting news. The group is a more mature iteration of the X-Men — befitting a superhero whose first movie was R-rated — and some potential members of the X-Force have, or will be, featured in X-Men movies.

The Deadpool sequel will introduce Cable, a mutant from the future with a bionic arm and an entertaining quasi-bromance with Deadpool. Bloodline's Kyle Chandler is currently the frontrunner for the role (though Keira Knightley could do it too, she has the range!).

Other X-Force members we could see: Colossus, who appeared in the first Deadpool film, and Psylocke, who made her first major live-action appearance in this summer's X-Men: Apocalypse. While Psylocke was, like many of the female X-Men in Apocalypsebrushed aside for a run-of-the-mill doomsday narrative, Psylocke actress Olivia Munn has expressed interest in reprising the role alongside the mercurial antihero.

"That would be a really cool thing to do," Munn told USA Today in May about teaming up with Reynolds. "It would definitely be cool to see Deadpool and some of the other X-Men characters gather for an X-Force movie. I think that's what the whole world is coming to — everybody unites together, right?"

The Twitterverse is united, too, at the prospect of an X-Force movie in the vein of a third Deadpool film. Suffice it to say, Fox, this would be a good call.
