The show has been running since 1974, created as a way for ABC to compete with the Grammys after their contract expired. Rather than rely on a voting academy of experts, like the Grammys, the show's website explains that its nominees are determined through "key fan interactions." Factors considered include "album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, streaming, social activity and touring."

The show's already lined up performances from some of pop's heavy hitters, including Nicki Minaj, the Chainsmokers, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and The Weeknd.
