Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2016 route, map and lineup

Impact

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is up there with turkey and stuffing as the most iconic elements of celebrating Thanksgiving. Whether you're seeing the parade from the streets of New York or watching it on TV, here's what to expect from the 90th anniversary of the beloved parade.

Route

The parade will kick off at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on the Upper West Side at 77th Street and Central Park West before traveling down Central Park West to Columbus Circle at 59th Street. The parade will then make a left turn and go down Central Park South to 6th Avenue, where it will travel down to 34th Street on its way to Herald Square.

Tickets aren't required to see the parade except in reserved grandstand areas, but be sure to get there early — viewers on Central Park West should grab a spot by 6:00 a.m., while those camping out later on in the parade route should probably arrive by 7:00 a.m. to get a good view.

Parade Lineup

Traveling along the parade route will, as always, be a host of performers and other stars. Among the major musical performers who will be aboard parade floats this year are Regina Spektor, Tony Bennett, Sarah McLachlan and hip-hop group De La Soul. Other celebs to watch out for include Olympic gold medalists Laurie Hernandez and Michelle Carter, and, as always, the stars of Sesame Street. You can see the full lineup here.

Among the parade floats this year will be such new additions as a float dedicated to the Girl Scouts of the USA and an Aloha Spirit King Hawaiian float, which will be complete with a real working waterfall. Balloons floating down the parade route will include beloved mainstays like the Pillsbury Doughboy, Thomas the Tank Engine and Hello Kitty, along with the new additions of Charlie Brown and a balloon from the recent Dreamworks film Trolls.

Television Broadcast

Of course, the audience for the parade extends far beyond New York City. Television broadcasts of the parade will begin at 9:00 a.m. local time, and as always, TV audiences will be treated to performances at Herald Square before the parade arrives. Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppet gang will get things started with a live performance to open the ceremonies, followed by performances from some of Broadway's top shows and the high-kicking Radio City Rockettes.

The Broadway shows set to perform on the NBC broadcast of the parade are Holiday Inn, an adaptation of the 1942 film with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire; the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats; Paramour, the Broadway musical from Cirque du Soleil; and the Tony-nominated musical Waitress.

The NBC broadcast will also include a preview performance from the cast of the upcoming Hairspray Live! The television broadcast on CBS, meanwhile, will feature performances from the Tony-winning revival of The Color Pruple, the Gloria Estefan musical On Your Feet! and School of Rock, a musical adaptation of the hit 2003 film. CBS audiences will also be able to enjoy performances from Sting and Grammy winner Miranda Lambert.
