The Associated Press reported Tuesday afternoon that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Syrian rebels and Syrian government fighters in Aleppo.

The Syrian military has been intensively focused on eastern Aleppo, forcing rebels to retreat. The military announced Monday that it had gained 99% control over the area.

"The battle in east Aleppo should end quickly," Lt. Gen. Zaid al-Saleh, head of the Aleppo security committee, told reporters Monday, according to Al Jazeera. "[The rebels] don't have much time. They either have to surrender or die."
