Jury unable to reach a verdict in Walter Scott murder trial, mistrial declared

Impact

A mistrial has been declared in the trial of Michael Slager, the South Carolina police officer accused of murdering Walter Scott, an unarmed black man who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in April 2015, the Associated Press reported Monday. The jury was reportedly unable to reach a consensus.

The 35-year-old former officer was accused of murdering Scott, 50, as Scott fled on foot. Authorities say Slager shot Scott five times as he tried to escape.

On Friday, Judge Clifton Newman reportedly told jurors to continue deliberating after they were unable to reach a unanimous decision. CNN video from inside the courtroom shows Newman telling jurors that if they could not reach a consensus, the case would be tried again.

On Monday, ABC News reported in a tweet that Scarlett Wilson, the prosecutor in the trial, released a statement expressing "disappointment that this case was not resolved" and said "We will try Michael Slager again."
