Who Won the Vice Presidential Debate: Biden Brings the Sass, Defeats Paul Ryan

Impact

After an obvious loss for President Obama during the first presidential debate, many are cautious with how to approach the vice presidential debate this Thursday. The lead that Obama had in polls are lost, and both Romney and Obama are showing support from 48% of voters. Now it is time for the conservative darling, Paul Ryan, and our favorite train-riding vice president, Joe Biden, to face off.

For most people, Joe Biden is somewhat of a joke. After countless gaffes, Biden has lost some of his agency. If you mention the name Biden, most people’s first reaction is usually something along the lines of, “Oh, Biden.” Joe Biden isn’t someone to take lightly, though. He has been involved in politics for 40 years, is a master of foreign policy, and is a skilled debater

Ryan, who is far younger and not as experienced than Biden, is predicted to win this debate. Ryan, who is claimed to be a budget genius, does have the tenacity to win this thing. He should be wary about questions relating to the Romney-Ryan tax plan, because “It would take me too long to go through all the math.”

There is no telling what will happen in this Thursday’s debate. What is certain is that there will be cutthroat action, insight into how these two skilled politicians perform under pressure, and the possibility for a few good gaffes.

UPDATE: 10:29 p.m.

Biden Closing Speech Highlights: Romney-Ryan have "bad attitudes," they aren't giving the middle class a fair shot, Obama-Biden will give them a leveled playing field, and ends on a solid note.

Ryan Closing Speech Highlights: "What kind of country will we be, what kind of country will we leave our kids?" He said that current office has given a real recovery, and they are offering a real recovery. He really practiced this speech.

UPDATE: 10:24 p.m.

Ryan: "That's what we get in this office. We get speeches, not leadership."

This is playing off the fact that during 2008, Obama made changes that inspired hope, and here we are four years later ...

Point for Ryan.

UPDATE: 10:23 p.m.

Martha: Are you ever ashamed of yourselves?

Biden: Sacred obligation is to get troops homes, and that the soldier shouldn't be clumped with the 47%.

Guess Biden didn't understand that the soldier is tired of the soundbites and cheap punches.

UPDATE: 10:22 p.m.

UPDATE: 10:18 p.m.

Ryan talked about his views on abortion. He didn't say anything that most of us didn't know.

Biden is taking the same approach. He is pro-choice, and believes it is a woman's choise.

The assault on the Catholic Church also came up...Georgetown just got mentioned.

That merits everyone to finish their drinks in our apartment. This topic has been huge on campus, and most people do agree with the changes that ACA is making with contraceptives.

UPDATE: 10:14 p.m.

Martha: What role has your religion played?

Yes, we have two Catholic politicians here. It is pretty exciting, and yes it is historical.

UPDATE: 10:05 p.m.

#LyinRyan is trending now. Our friend here at Georgetown called this about a half hour ago.

UPDATE: 10:04 p.m.

We are patiently waiting...25 more minutes to go

UPDATE: 9:56 p.m.

Yes...yes, yes, yes.

UPDATE: 9:53 p.m.

Biden has been sassy tonight. We love it here.

UPDATE: 9:51 p.m.

Martha asks Ryan, "Do you have specifics for this plan, or are you all still working on it, and that is why you haven't been able to?"

This is the question we have all been wondering!! Thank you, Martha.

UPDATE: 9:49 p.m.

Ryan: "We need fundamental tax reform." He wants lower tax rates across the board, and don't raise taxes on the middle class.

UPDATE: 9:45 p.m.

Biden: "I gave you a simple answer. He is raising the price of Medicare."

Everyone in the room can't stop laughing. Biden's tenacity is great.

UPDATE: 9:43 p.m.

Martha just asked Biden why they can't slowly raise the Medicare age by two years at a time. Biden didn't answer. Negotiation isn't an option with our current politicians.

UPDATE: 9:41 p.m.

Ok, Ryan tried to play that off smoothly, but he just got called out for that bluff. You have no democratic support for this.

And...Biden almost faced palmed. This is fantastic.

UPDATE: 9:36 p.m.

Ryan brought up the death panels again. They are really beating that one over the head. They need to get their facts straight on this. The panel they are describing is unconstitutional and is not what ACA outlines.

Social security won't be privatized either. It will run out either way. The program just isn't set to be sustainable.

UPDATE: 9:34 p.m.

Ryan: Was it a good idea to borrow all that money from countries like China?

It seems like Biden is trying his best not to call b***s***. He did say that they did what they needed to do so that the US doesn't fall off a cliff. Now, on to Medicare.

UPDATE: 9:30 p.m.

UPDATE: 9:24 p.m.

Martha: Can you get unemployment to under 6% and how long will it take?

Biden just pulled the 47% card. "They are holding hostage the middle class tax cut, unless they also get the tax cut for the super wealthy."

UPDATE: 9:21 p.m.

Biden: Iran doesn't have any weapons to put enriched uranium. "Everyone just needs to calm down".

The consensus here at our Georgetown viewing: Biden just seems more likeable right now.

UPDATE: 9:19 p.m.

If the Romney-Ryan ticket, can you solve this in two months?

...no real response from Ryan, and Biden just jumped on this. He is on attack mode.

UPDATE: 9:17 p.m.

One viewer with me says, "Ryan is wearing the bigger America pin. Someone is overcompensating."

UPDATE 9:14 p.m.

Martha is definitely not playing games. She is going straight to the point. So, how effective would a military strike be?

Ryan: Administration has been "blocking sanctions" that Ryan has been proposing. I am loving Biden's face throughout this!

UPDATE: 9:08 p.m.

Yes, Biden is calling it like it is. None of what Ryan just said is accurate. This is exactly what Obama needed to do last week.

UPDATE: 9:03 p.m.

First topic up, Libya.

Biden is pointing out Romney's inconsistency with his answers about what he would have done in Libya, and with Osama.

Ryan is arguing that they tried to cover up the terrorist attack with a Youtube video. It took them 2 weeks to call this issue a terrorist attack. Pretty heavy argument.

UPDATE: 9:02 p.m.

Martha is up. Biden will be first to answer question according to the coin toss. Come on, Joe!

UPDATE: 8:57 p.m.

Alright everybody, the time has come. Here is a live video for all of you who are still searching:

Happy watching! Stay tuned for some sick analysis from yours truly.

UPDATE: 7:23 p.m.

This is definitely happening. Prepare to have your minds blown with wisdoms bombs all night.

UPDATE: 5:28 p.m.

If this debate ends up being a bust, at least we will have this eye candy to look:

We can all thank Gregg Segal from the Times for these beauties.

UPDATE: 4:05 p.m.

Currently, polls are not really in favor for either Biden or Ryan. Some are predicting Ryan to be slaughtered by Biden, the more seasoned debater. In the other corner of the rink, predictions are calling Ryan to come out triumphant with his boldness and great analytical skills.

For a great analysis of what both sides are bringing to the table, I recommend this

UPDATE: 12:11 a.m.

Joe Biden is being predicted as the loser of tonight's debate by some, but we shouldn't underestimate Biden just yet. He's got skillssss.

Here are a few highlights of his greatest debate moments

UPDATE: 8:33 p.m.

The debate is just hours away. While we all anxiously wait, it is a good idea to polish up on the "Winners and Losers" from last week's debate.

The debate will take place on Thursday, October 11th, from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Martha Raddatz, senior foreign affairs correspondent from ABC News will be the moderator. The debate will cover foreign and domestic topics. There will be nine time segments of 10 minutes each. The candidates will have two minutes to respond, and use the remaining time for discussion and rebuttals.
