BBC Music Awards start time, channel, performers and more

Some of the top names in music will get their chance in the spotlight this Monday, Dec. 12, as the BBC Music Awards are presented once again in the United Kingdom. The annual awards ceremony will take place this year at ExCel London in a ceremony hosted by British television and radio presenters Fearne Cotton, Claudia Winkleman and Gemma Cairney.

Here's what to know about this year's awards for those watching on either side of the pond.

2016 Nominees

This year's BBC Music Awards will recognize artists in five categories: BBC Music British artist of the year, song of the year (voted for by members of the public) and BBC Music introducing artist of the year will return for 2016, along with the new categories of BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance of the year and BBC Radio 2 album of the year.

Musician Izzy Bizu has already been announced as BBC Music introducing artist of the year, and the shortlist of nominees for British artist of the year consists of Adele, Calvin Harris, David Bowie, Jess Glynne and Coldplay. Songs up for best song of the year include "Hello" by Adele, "Can't Stop the Feeling!" by Justin Timberlake, "Sorry" by Justin Bieber and "Work" by Rihanna featuring Drake.

Nominees for the Live Lounge performance of the year include performances by Christine and the Queens, Craig David and Usher. The albums up for a BBC Music album of the year award, meanwhile, are 25 by Adele, A Head Full of Dreams by Coldplay, Alone in the Universe by Jeff Lynne's ELO, Love & Hate by Michael Kiwanuka and 50 by Rick Astley.

Performers

The awards ceremony will also include a star-studded lineup of performers. Currently set to perform are nominees Craig David, Emeli Sandé, Lukas Graham and the 1975, along with introducing artist winner Izzy Bizu.

Also slated to perform during the ceremony are Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter John Legend, English indie rock band the Kaiser Chiefs, renowned British pop singer Robbie Williams and Swedish pop star Zara Larsson.

Start time and how to watch

The festivities will kick off on Dec. 12 at 8:30 p.m. GMT (that's 3:30 p.m. Eastern time) on BBC One in the United Kingdom, which will broadcast the entire awards ceremony live from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The event will also be livestreamed on the BBC Music website here.

BBC Radio 1 and 2 will also take part in the festivities, with artist interviews and special features starting at 4:00 p.m. and a backstage broadcast from the awards with Jo Whiley kicking off on Radio 2 at 8:00 p.m. GMT. The BBC will also keep up with social media throughout the awards, including tweets with the hashtag #BBCMusicAwards and live videos with artists on their Facebook page.

For those in the U.K. who can't watch on the night, the awards ceremony will also be available on BBC iPlayer for 30 days following the live broadcast. The radio broadcasts will also be available on BBC iPlayer Radio and the BBC Music app. 

Though iPlayer Radio can typically be accessed outside of the U.K., the BBC Music app and iPlayer are only available to those inside the U.K. Americans wanting to watch the awards, however, are still in luck, as BBC America will broadcast the entire ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 14 beginning at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.
