The 2017 SAG Awards nominations continue the award show's anti-#OscarsSoWhite trend

Culture

The earlier award shows, like the Golden Globes, are a good precursor for how, and which, films and television series should expect recognition from the Oscars and the Emmys. But the Screen Actors Guild and its annual SAG Awards was also celebrated last year for bucking the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, with diverse nominations and awards. In that sense, the 2017 SAG Awards nominations are par for the course.

The nominations were announced Wednesday, and three of the five films nominated for the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture category feature primarily black casts: Moonlight, Fences and Hidden Figures. It's especially fitting for actress Viola Davis — who stars in Fences and has been heralded for her performance — after she addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy at last year's SAG Awards.

"Diversity is not a trending topic," Davis told reporters backstage at the award show, following her best actress in a television drama series win for How to Get Away With Murder. "No matter what is going on in the business, I will find a way to practice my art, and all of the actors of color that I know don't place any limitations on themselves either."

Other notable nominees include Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series. Brown was snubbed from a similar category at the Golden Globes (though given the competition, it was understandable), but it's an encouraging sign that 2016's breakout star drew recognition from one of the industry's major guilds.
