Former Milwaukee Police Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown was charged Thursday morning with first-degree reckless homicide for fatally shooting 23-year-old Sylville Smith, according to WISN.

Body camera footage from Aug. 13 showed Smith, a black man, fleeing from police while carrying a semi-automatic handgun. The footage also shows Smith raising his arms to throw his gun over the fence and into the yard.

The footage, according to WISN, shows Heaggan-Brown shooting Smith on the right arm as he raised his gun above the fence. Smith then fell to the ground. Heaggan-Brown is then reportedly seen standing over Smith and shooting him in the chest. Several protests erupted in Milwaukee for days after Smith was shot and killed. The officer was fired in October, according to Fox 6 News.

Heaggan-Brown was also charged with second-degree sexual assault in July for an unrelated incident. According to WISN, prosecutors said Heaggan-Brown had sexual photos in his cellphone of him and an unconscious victim. He was charged with two counts of prostitution for reportedly offering two men money in exchange for sex in December 2015.

The Milwaukee Police Department has not yet responded to Mic's request for comment.
