President Obama pledges to take action on Russian hacking

Impact

On Thursday night, President Barack Obama told NPR the United States will respond to Russia's cyberattacks.

"I think there is no doubt that when any foreign government tries to impact the integrity of our elections ... we need to take action. And we will — at a time and place of our own choosing. Some of it may be explicit and publicized; some of it may not be," Obama told NPR.

Putin had a personal hand in leaking information obtained by Russian hackers that potentially influenced the presidential election, Mic previously reported.

Obama did not blame Clinton's loss on the leaked information, but he said "I have no doubt that it had some impact, just based on the coverage." He did not suggest that Trump's campaign had a hand in the cyberattack.

The president met with Putin in September, when the two discussed cybersecurity, NPR noted.

President-elect Donald Trump questioned whether Russia was actually behind a cyberattack in a tweet he posted on Thursday morning. As of 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, he has not issued a comment about Obama's recent pledge for action.
