'Doctor Who' Christmas episode 2016: When and where to watch the season 12 special

"The Return of Doctor Mysterio," the Christmas special of the popular science-fiction TV show Doctor Who, will premiere Dec. 25 on BBC America at 9 p.m. Eastern. 

Who's on the show? 

The special will feature Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, who joins forces with a masked superhero called The Ghost, played by Justin Chatwin. Also featured on the show is journalist Lucy Fletcher, who is played by Charity Wakefield. Matt Lucas will also be featured on the show as Nardole, a colonist from Mendorax Dellora who was first introduced in the 2015 Christmas special. Cast members also include Adetomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman. 

What's happening? 

Written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Edward Bazalgette, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" follows the Doctor, the Ghost and Lucy Fletcher as they work to save New York from an attack of brain-swapping aliens. 

 Fans can also watch the episode in movie theaters Dec. 27 and 29.
