Vampire Diaries Season 4 Premiere Spoilers: Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev Find Love on the CW

The Vampire Diaries, the CW's fan and social media winner, returns with the premiere of season 4 tonight. The teen-geared drama has been a social media phenomenon, with the show and its characters becoming Twitter trends regularly. As fans gear up for season 4, no one should be surprised when we start seeing "TVD" "Elena and Damon" or "Elena and Stefan" in our Twitter feeds. The program also feeds (vampire joke) right into America's ongoing obsession with vampires: think Twilight, True Blood, and yes, The Vampire Diaries.

Season 4 begins on a heavy-duty cliff-hanger. Season 3 ended with a tragic car accident that put Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) in critical condition. As we begin season 4 she is well underway to becoming a vampire and is in full transition mode; and she's not very happy about it. It seems that most of the first episode will be dealing with everyone's reactions to Elena's new vampire status.

Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, told MTV News about Elena's transformation, "What's actually going to be really interesting is to see what now happens with this one ... the flood of emotion, and the flood of desire to feed and how all of that is going to play out with her."

Another big factor of her switch to vampire status, is that all of her memories will return. The question then emerges is whether Elena will choose Stefan over Damon now that she has access to all her memories. As for the character of Damon, Somerhalder told Entertainment Weekly,"It doesn't really matter whether she's a vampire or  human being. He loves her either way." Of course, there will be a fair share of bad guys. The Vampire Diaries thrives on a little healthy antagonism, this time in the form of the Founders' Council.

The biggest question of the evening remains, what will happen with Elena and of course, what will become of this vampire love triangle.

The Vampire Diaries premiere airs Thursday October 11 at 8 p.m. on the CW.
