Latest Presidential Polls: WSJ and NBC Polls Show Romney Surging in Florida and Virginia

Impact

On the eve of the one and only vice presidential debate 2012, more polls are bringing more good news to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney (especially where it counts; in the battleground states).

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Marist College survey founds Mitt Romney and President Obama in a dead heat among likely voters in Florida, with Obama at 48% versus Romney’s 47%. The situation is similar in Virginia, where Romney holds a one-point lead over Obama (48% to 47%). However, in the crucial battleground state of Ohio, Obama is retaining a 6-point lead over Mitt Romney, 51% to 45%. No Republican has won the presidency without winning Ohio.

Similarly, a new poll by The New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac University is registering gains for the Republican ticket in swing states. In Colorado, the race is in a statistical dead heat with Romney up one point over Obama (48% to 47%). In Wisconsin, home of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, Obama is still in the lead over Romney, 50% to 47%.

Though tonight's debate is not expected to move the needle one way or another, Democrats are expecting Vice President Biden to deliver a solid performance in order to undercut some of the momentum Mitt Romney has gained from his win over Obama in last weeks' first presidential debate. Conversely, Republicans hope a Ryan follow up to Romney's strong performance in Denver can continue chipping away at President Obama's narrowing lead in the coming weeks. Either way, it will be a horse race all the way to November 6.
