'Girls' Season 6 release date: Here's what we know about the final season of the HBO show

It's time to say goodbye to our favorite girls. Lena Dunham's acclaimed HBO series, Girls, is coming to an end after six seasons, and it all begins this February. HBO released the first full-length trailer for the final season on Sunday.

Returning after its best season ever, it looks like Hannah is writing an essay that seems to involve and affect everyone in her life differently. 

The girls are continuing to find themselves, examining their complicated group dynamic: Marnie is still in a relationship with Ray that Hannah still does not approve of. Shoshanna is continuing to grow and finding friendship elsewhere, while Jessa is still reeling from everyone being mad at her about Adam. 

As for Hannah? She's just trying to write and express herself. In the trailer, we see her interview with an editor (played by Chelsea Peretti). "I want to write stories that make people feel less alone than I did. I want to make people laugh about the things in life that are painful," she says. 

For Dunham, ending the show now makes perfect sense. She told the Hollywood Reporter that she didn't want the show to overstay its welcome. "We've been very blessed to have the experience of people continuing to engage in the show in a really kind of rabid way after four — heading into five — years. We wanted to make sure we kept the momentum alive and didn't allow it to soften over time," Dunham said. 

The sixth and final season of Girls premieres on HBO on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 10 p.m. Eastern.
