'American Horror Story' renewed for two more seasons and of course we don't know the plots

FX is doubling down on Ryan Murphy and his horror franchise. In addition to the already announced season seven of American Horror Story, the network has renewed the series for two additional seasons. So, at bare minimum, fans will have American Horror Story through season nine.

"American Horror Story launched the modern limited series revolution and — as evidenced by the most recent installment Roanoke — it remains as vital today as when Murder House stunned audiences six years ago," FX CEO John Landgraf said in a press release. "Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot."

Since American Horror Story debuted in 2011, the show has been a major commercial and critical player. The latter successes slowed a bit this year, as The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story earned most of FX's plaudits. Ratings for the franchise, however, remain strong.

Most significantly, as Landgraf nodded to in his statement, American Horror Story was the show that brought the anthology format back to TV in a major way. Series like Fargo, True Detective, American Crime and more owe their style to what Murphy revived with this series.

American Horror Story has no announced release date — or plot details — but season seven is expected to hit FX later this year.
