Grammy Predictions 2017: Drake is album of the year frontrunner, according to Spotify

Culture

On Sunday, the 59th Annual Grammy Awards will honor the best in music. This year, it is a battle between Beyoncé and Adele in most of the major categories, but it's album of the year that could go to anyone.

While we've predicted Beyoncé will probably take home the award for album of the year based on critics' reviews and Lemonade's impact on culture in the past year, it's hard to deny that Drake's album Views broke records left, right and center.

Drake's Views might have earned just lukewarm reviews from critics, but the album was an incredible streaming success.

The numbers

For the first two weeks of the album's release, Views was exclusive to Apple Music. Following the initial platform release, the album then was released on Spotify and other streaming platforms, and was also released in physical form too.

The songs on Views earned a total of over 3 billion streams on Spotify, with "One Dance" earning a record-breaking 1 billion streams, nabbing the title of the most streamed song in Spotify history.

Over at Apple Music, the Apple ambassador's album racked up over 1 billion streams, adding to Drake's many accomplishments last year.

As if that wasn't enough, Views also spent six months in the top five on the Billboard 200 chart after debuting at No. 1 in May. Views found itself in great company with several other notable records that spent at least 26 weeks in the top five: Adele's 21, Michael Jackson's Bad, Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, The Bodyguard soundtrack, Garth Brooks' Ropin' the Wind and the Eagles' Hotel California.

In recent years, the album of the year winner has varied. Taylor Swift's smash hit 1989 took the award home last year, and Beck's Morning Phase nabbed the award in 2015, a win we're still trying to process.

If Drake's record-breaking year in 2016 is any indication, album of the year is his. It's hard to deny his impact on music thanks to massively successful singles like "Hotline Bling" and "One Dance." His winning the biggest prize at the Grammys would be the ultimate cherry on the top of his cake.
