Final Presidential Debate: How Much Will Foreign Policy Influence the Outcome of the Election

Impact

The second debate between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney reached 65.6 million television sets last Tuesday night. While not the highest ratings in presidential debate history, it certainly makes the Top 10 highest-viewed debates list.

How will the ratings turn out tonight? Honestly, I'm skeptical. This election has not focused on foreign affairs the way 2008 did or, before that, in 2004. Looking into my crystal ball, I believe we will see a drop in viewers tonight.

In today's edition of C-SPAN's Washington Journal, Johnathan Tepperman, offered very telling remarks. Among them, Tepperman noted that America behaves like a country in peacetime. While American families with loved one in service face hardship, most Americans can easily forget that we are a nation at war.

That said, foreign policy is not going to win this election, and the candidates know it. While this may disappoint some of you will burning foreign policy questions (I have at least 3 of my own burning questions), what may be interesting to count are the number of times the candidates don't talk about foreign affairs.

I'll let that one simmer with you. See you at 9:00 p.m. EST tonight!
