Prince fans remember the pop icon's legacy on Twitter, one year after his sudden death

On this day last year, Prince's sudden death shocked the world. The pop icon died at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota. His cause of death was an accidental opioid overdose. One year later, the aching void left by his passing remains for many. Fans, many still in mourning, remembered the artist's legacy Friday morning on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPPrince

Some fans remembered the Purple One by tweeting out lyrics from his songs, such as "For You," "Diamonds and Pearls" and "Let's Go Crazy."

Others tweeted GIFs illustrating Prince's smooth showmanship and unique style while expressing the hole the singer's death had left in their hearts.

Others tweeted vibrant murals of Prince in the Camden neighborhood of London, and in the singer's native Minnesota.

Meanwhile, his hometown of Minneapolis has declared April 21 Prince Day. A bridge in downtown Minneapolis was lit up in purple Thursday night, and will again be illuminated in purple Friday evening in Prince's honor, the Associated Press reported.

Additionally, new music from Prince's vault of unheard songs was scheduled to be released Friday, but a judge blocked its sale Wednesday. Prince's estate sued the project's producer, George Ian Boxill on Tuesday, the New York Times reports. Boxill had planned to put out six new songs on Prince's anniversary in a project called Deliverance
