'The Flash' Season 3, Episode 19 Preview: Will Savitar's identity finally be revealed?

Culture

It's been a few weeks, but The Flash is finally set to return with all-new episodes. And it is about time, because fans of the Scarlet Speedster have been waiting (not so) patiently for the answer to one of the series' biggest mysteries: Who is Savitar?

In season three of The Flash, Barry has gone up against likely his most dangerous villain yet. Savitar appears near unstoppable, and because he is from the future, he knows exactly how things will play out. And one tragedy that is set happen — unless Barry can change the future — is Iris West will die.

The fact that Barry has seen his now fiancée's fate, has caused him to do things that he otherwise would have never considered — including letting villains walk in an attempt to change headlines from the future. In episode 18, however, Barry decided not to let Abra Kadabra go free, even though doing so would mean finally learning Savitar's identity.

Now, with Abra Kadabra gone, Barry is going to seek out the only other people that may know the answer to the season's burning question. And those people happen to all reside in the future. In episode 19, titled "The Once and Future Flash," Barry will travel to the future to confront a more weathered version of himself, and the rest of his remaining team, hopefully so he can learn how to stop Savitar.

Does this mean we will finally learn the evil speedster's identity? Quite possibly. Should the Savitar reveal not happen in episode 19, it will be the latest that the show has gone into a season without Team Flash officially learning the identity of the big bad. In season one, though the audience already knew, Caitlin Snow doesn't learn that Harrison Wells is Reverse-Flash until episode 19. In season two, Barry and the team learn that Jay Garrick (or who they thought was Jay Garrick) was Zoom in episode 16.

This, of course, is not evidence that Savitar's identity will be revealed during Barry's trip to the future. However, with only four episodes remaining after "The Once and Future Flash," the creative team behind The Flash may want to get the reveal out of the way in order build towards the finale. And to be frank, it would seem fairly inexplicable if Barry is not able to learn Savitar's identity from someone or something in the future.

Here is the official synopsis for season three, episode 19 of The Flash:

Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar's still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be the hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues.
