'Saturday Night Live' asked Trump to appear on the episode Alec Baldwin hosted

Since October, Alec Baldwin has been delivering a hilarious, if perhaps too on the nose, impersonation of Donald Trump to Saturday Night Live viewers. And while the show continues to roast him on a regular basis, Baldwin recently revealed that they genuinely wanted Trump to be there for the Feb. 11 episode that he hosted. 

Appearing on The Ellen Show Wednesday, the actor told Ellen Trump was invited to Baldwin's 17th anniversary hosting SNL.

"I can't imagine what it would be like if I met him [now], if I ran into him," Baldwin said on the talk show. "When we did the show — when I hosted SNL this season — we asked him to come. We invited him to come, we were so hopeful he would come, but he didn't show up."

NBC has yet to confirm or deny Baldwin's claim, but, given his public distaste for Trump, it's surprising how on-board Baldwin seemed with the idea. 

Baldwin also discussed how he came upon his uncanny impersonation of Trump in his interview with Ellen. Apparently he had no idea how he was going to play Trump. However, Baldwin explains as he was walking into position before heading on stage he recalled the iconic look Trump gives — "left eyebrow up, right eyebrow down, put your mouth out like this," and bam, there he was. 

Baldwin has said he won't be portraying Trump on SNL for much longer because he believes, given the state of the country and the world, it will start depressing audiences. Humor, however, is one of the only things helping America cope with this presidency. It may be mean-spirited and over-the-top at times, but it's still part of the political conversation that keeps the American people connected to the powers above.
