Officer who killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards to be charged with murder

Impact

The fired Balch Springs, Texas, officer who fatally shot 15-year-old honor roll student Jordan Edwards will be charged with murder, according to a report from the Dallas Morning News. The officer, Roy Oliver, has yet to be arrested. The bond for Oliver will be set at $300,000.

On Saturday night, Oliver allegedly opened fire on a group of teens in a vehicle because they were moving toward officers "in an aggressive manner." The police department later found out that Oliver had changed the story, and instead the teenagers in the car were fleeing. Edwards, who was inside the car, was fatally shot. Oliver was fired from the department earlier this week.

Oliver had previously been ordered to take anger management classes in 2013 after an angry outburst in court that led two prosecutors to say that the officer was a "scary person to have in our workroom."

According to the Washington Post, which tracks nationwide police shootings, Edwards is the youngest person killed this year at 15. So far this year, 339 people have been fatally shot by police.

Edwards' family described him as a "loving child with a humble and sharing spirit," per the Dallas Morning News. A private funeral for Edwards will be held on Saturday.
