'13 Reasons Why' Season 2: Questions about Hannah, the timeline and cliffhangers answered

Culture

13 Reasons Why was renewed for a second season Sunday, coming after weeks of expectation and concern over what a new installment of Netflix's YA series would look like. The show, starring Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette, focusing on a girl who leaves behind 13 cassettes detailing the circumstances that led to her suicide, has been a massive hit for Netflix. But it has drawn much criticism for its depictions of suicide and lack of trigger warnings.

In this case, the show's success won out, and the second season is charging ahead. Yet there are still questions to be answered about exactly what said season will look like. So showrunner Brian Yorkey sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss what's ahead. Here's what we learned from the chat:

Hannah Baker will be in season 2

Netflix

Though her tapes are all listened to and she's dead, Hannah, played by Langford, will apparently appear in season two. The main reason for this, according to Yorkey, is to flesh out her backstory.

I think one of the things that is still hanging out there is this question of is someone responsible for Hannah's death? Is the school responsible? Who is responsible, if anyone is? One way we'll explore that question is through the trial and also through all of these kids reflecting on where they are a few months down the road and what other secrets are being uncovered. That's going to take us into the past, into Hannah's story.

The season 1 finale cliffhangers will be addressed

Netflix

"We're going to answer all of the burning questions that people have about [the show]," Yorkey told EW. That includes Tyler Down's guns, Alex Standall's fate post-shooting and more

Is Tyler going to do something? What's going to happen to Alex? Will Bryce be brought to justice? We're going to answer those questions, but I think, even more, we're going to continue to look very truthfully and very honestly at what they go through, even when it's painful at times.

There will still be 2 timelines

Netflix

Yorkey said 13 Reasons Why will be "definitely still weaving past and present" in the new season. The present timeline will "pick up a number of months after the first season ended," he added.

The voice-over will no longer be Hannah's

Netflix

While the second season of 13 Reasons Why will have a narrator, that narrator won't be Hannah. "The voice-over and the stories that are being told bring us into the past and back to the present much in the way that Hannah's voice-over did in season one," Yorkey said. "So there will still be that weaving of timeframes and seeing them unfold and how they impact each other as they go."

Speculation time: Will it be Clay Jensen? Or Jessica Davis, perhaps? We won't know for sure until 13 Reasons Why hits Netflix in 2018.
