We don't know where Gendry is on 'Game of Thrones,' but Joe Dempsie has a new show

Where oh where has Gendry — the bastard son of Robert Baratheon and thus a contender for the Iron Throne — been? While he was last seen rowing a boat toward King's Landing way back in season three of Game of Thrones, fans will be pleased to hear he was recently spotted near the series' Icelandic shooting location, so there's a good chance he'll be returning in season seven.

But what the heck has Joe Dempsie, who plays Gendry, been up to since his last stint on the show in 2013? Quite a bit of film and mini-series work, actually. He's also slated to star in a new espionage thriller called Deep State.

The tagline alone is pretty intriguing:

What happens when a man who believes he has retired from MI6 is called back to do one more job to regain his life, only to discover that this job may mean he has no life to go back to.

That man in question in the tagline is Max Easton, played by The Imitation Game's Mark Strong. Dempsie plays a secret agent named Harry Clarke who, according to Variety, has trouble doing his job because of his "moral compass." While not totally the same character description as Gendry's, the desire to be a decent person is definitely a through-line.

Deep State will be Fox Network Group's first regional scripted commission and is slated to air in over 50 countries worldwide. It's currently shooting on location in Morocco, the site of many well-known films, including the 1999 remake of The Mummy. Much of Daenerys' storyline in Game of Thrones was also shot there, and even though Dempsie wasn't in those scenes, he might feel some cross-continental connection to the Mother of Dragons.

Aside from a vague premiere date for sometime in 2018, not much is currently known about Deep State. For now, Gendry fans will just have to imagine him wearing something much more modern than mud-brown leather and fighting with a gun instead of a sword.
