President Donald Trump's approval numbers continue to sink amid recent controversies

President Donald Trump's approval rating continues to slump, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.

In the wake of his sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey, the poll found Trump's approval hovering around 42%, with half of registered voters claiming to disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president.

And while 42% approval isn't high, it's actually higher than the results of other, similar polls. According to RealClearPolitics, the most recent Gallup poll numbers currently have Trump at just 38% approval.

The Politico poll was conducted in the aftermath of Comey's dismissal, but before Trump's White House was hit with a barrage of other negative press. This includes allegations that he shared classified information with senior Russian officials during a meeting and a New York Times report that Trump had appealed to Comey to halt his investigation into former United States national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russia.

The split on Trump's approval remains heavily partisan, however. According to Politico, 79% of GOP voters approve of the job Trump is currently doing, with only 16% claiming to disapprove. Democratic voters, meanwhile, represent the inverse: 15% approve, while 79% claim to disapprove.
