Chris Cornell Cause Of Death: Medical examiner, autopsy confirm suicide

Grunge icon and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell's sudden death at 52 has officially been declared a suicide by the Wayne County Medical Examiners Office.

"The Medical Examiner has completed the autopsy on 52-year-old Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden musician who died last night in Detroit," the office wrote in a statement to Mic. "The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide."

A full autopsy report has yet to be completed at this time, and the office has confirmed they have no additional information at present.

The news came as a shock to fans, Cornell's close friends and his wife, Vicky Cornell. Sources who spoke with Vicky told TMZ the singer was "not in any way, shape or form in a suicidal state" adding there were "no signs he was at all depressed."

Cornell's body had been found early Thursday in a Detroit hotel room at the MGM Grand casino. The singer had played what will now be remembered as his last show with Soundgarden the night before at the Fox Theater.
