Adam Sandler's new movie is earning him rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival.

Sandler stars in Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories alongside Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. The film premiered on Sunday at the festival and critics are praising Sandler for his performance.

The film revolves around the Meyerowitz family, who come together for an event to celebrate their father. Sandler plays recently divorced Danny Meyerowitz, a man who is a little lost in life.

Sandler is mostly known for his broad comedic work but has occasionally turned out solid performances in films like Punch Drunk Love and Funny People. In The Meyerowitz Stories, critics are saying that Sandler is so good that it could be the start of a mini-comeback for the actor.

Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter said Sandler finally brings it in this movie with a great portrayal of his character. "[Sandler] has spent most of his career hiding the fact that he can hold his own and more with the likes of his co-stars here," McCarthy said.

Collider's Gregory Ellwood said that Sandler is actually so good that it almost distracts from the other great performances from the rest of the cast. "The veteran comedy star hasn't delivered a performance of this caliber since Judd Apatow's Funny People almost eight years ago," Ellwood said.

Vanity Fair's Jordan Hoffman said that Sandler's performance in the film will make fans forget about some of his other, not-so-great performances.

If Sandler's immature comedies make you ill, his turn here as the neglected older son with a big heart and a limp is tremendous. He's a loser but not a dope — and just when you think this character is veering into cliché, he'll show a shade that jostles your perception.

Other festival goers also couldn't get enough of Sandler's performance:

The highest praise of all comes from Peter Debruge of Variety who wrote that Sandler's performance in the Netflix-acquired film could conceivably earn him his first-ever Oscar nomination. "With no shtick to fall back on, Sandler is forced to act, and it's a glorious thing to watch."

The Meyerowitz Stories is set for release later this year.
