How to audition for 'American Idol': Locations, dates and everything you need to know

For singing hopefuls who thought their recording-star dreams were crushed when American Idol bid farewell in 2016 after 15 seasons, here is some good news: the show is beginning their search in August for a new crop of undiscovered talent. Pop star Katy Perry made the official announcement about auditions, via a video on Twitter Monday.

This year participants can audition online or in person. For those unknown singers hoping to be part of the live singing competition for the season ahead, here is how to audition, beginning Thursday, Aug. 17.

American Idol eligibility

In order to audition for American Idol, entrants must be between the ages of 15 and 28. Additionally, entrants must be legal U.S. residents and must prove that they have no contractual obligations that will conflict with the show if they are selected to be part of the competition. Those interested in auditioning online can register by creating a profile on American Idol's website. Applicants will be asked to provide personal information and answer if they previously auditioned for the series or other singing competitions.

Additionally, they must provide a video or text introduction describing who they are and why they should be the next Idol. Potential Idol contestants will also have to upload their audition video. According to the rules, audition videos can be sung a cappella or with a musical instrument, but not with a backing track. It also cannot contain any voice effects or enhancements. For those who prefer to show off their singing skills in person, the American Idol auditions will be held on the East and West Coasts in August and September. Below is a complete list of the tour dates.

More news is to come about the judges who will sit with Katy Perry when the series returns in 2018. The show is in talks with Ryan Seacrest to have him reclaim his hosting duties.
