Election Day 2012 LIVE: New York City Election Results and Electoral College Updates

Impact

I decided to get an early start today and vote just as the polls opened near my upper eastside home. At 5:50 a.m. I was on a line of about 50 or 60 people. We waited, and waited. Finally, a cop came by to tell us that the scanners were not working. We could sign up but would have to wait for an hour or more before we could actually vote. The line of people behind had already increased to several hundred.

You would think the polling people would have tested the equipment during the previous day. Nope.

This is the kind of outrageous nonsense that voters will likely experience today throughout the country. In the 21st Century you would think that the most advanced society and government in the world could conduct an election without this sort of incompetence. Polling issues of this sort are a huge impediment to people exercising their right to vote.

We gave up and will try later.

I should note that my family was on hand for the elections in Bhutan when the country converted from a monarchy to a democracy. The elections were so much more organized than what is happening in the US. Very impressive.
