Why Delays in Voting in New York Due to Sandy May Aid in Voting Fraud

Impact

Due to Hurricane Sandy, Governor Andrew Cuomo has set into order Executive Order Number 47 declaring a disaster emergency in all 62 counties in the state of New York. Provisions relating to the election law have been temporarily suspended, which could mean that foul play is afoot.

Absentee and affidavit ballots make voting fraud plausible, which is not to mention the trouble we could see if more days are allotted to vote. Voter fraud is always important to watch for if the race is close. Come midnight, if the polls are as tight as predicted, or if Mitt Romney has the advantage, we can expect delayed results.

The lack of action/concern taken by President Obama during the Sandy crisis, in which thousands of New Yorkers are still without power, is tantamount to negligence. This storm was not as devastating as Katrina, and it wasn’t as terrifying as the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, but when homes are without power for an extended period of time, citizens' livelihoods are in jeopardy.

Once the power issue is resolved, which is taking way too long regardless of the “systematic approach to restoring power” that LIPA contends, there is the daunting issue of voters not even wanting to vote, which is where the absentee vote problem comes in. New York is still also facing a serious gas shortage. This feels like a systematic approach to fixing an election.

Bloomberg said at a press conference this week in regard to the gas’ arrival that “it may take a few more days before you see this additional supply." Panic, anger, and depression all settle in when the needs of the people goes ignored. There is no sign of urgency on the side of Bloomberg, or, more importantly, President Obama.

Voting fraud is not a myth. Governor Cuomo's suspension of provisions is the first step in opening Pandora's box. If a few extra days were added to the voting, we can be sure to see justifiable outrage from the Republican side.

The worst part of it all is that this could provoke major upsets. The election year of 2000 was unnerving enough, but American citizens still had faith in the electoral process. Of course, plenty of eyebrows were raised, but life goes on, and Al Gore didn’t put up much of a fight.

A week before Sandy was en route ,I joked with some of my friends about this being the a perfect storm for the Democrats if the election goes sideways for Obama. The election has gone sideways for Obama. This article is patriotically driven, with a touch of paranoia, but in no way do I want to see this drama unfold in such a manner.

An eye-opening approach to politics is always necessary. In the words of Sister Corita Kent: "Damn everything but the circus."
