Morgan Freeman Marriage Equality Ad: America Sweetest Voice Has a Thing or Two to Say About Marriage Equality

Impact

Every now and again Morgan Freeman lends his incredibly sultry voice to a greater cause. He did it for Barack Obama, when he narrated a pro-Obama ad that inspired and emotionally resonated in only the way the voice of a 75-year-old man with a melodious baritone is able to do. Once again Freeman is lending his voice to a greater cause, this time in support of gay marriage.

In a 30-second television spot for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT group, Freeman's narrative compares the ongoing marriage equality plight to women's suffrage and the civil rights movement. The ad utilizes this month's votes on marriage equality as a catalyst for further change on the issue across the country. The Human Rights Campaign does not want us to lose our momentum.

The ad is timed to this Friday's Supreme Court consideration over whether or not the Court will hear cases in the coming year addressing if California's Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act are constitutional.

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin said in a statement to BuzzFeed, "This year proved to be a pivotal turning point in the movement for marriage equality and now we press onward with renewed vigor and public opinion squarely on our side. As we continue the march toward full equality in legislatures and the courts, it is crystal clear that the prospect of an equal future is no longer up for debate; the question now is how soon it will arrive."

If Morgan Freeman's voice has any sway over the matter things will be moving right along rather quickly. As he says in the spot, "America stands at the dawn of a new day." Let's make sure the sun doesn't set on this opportunity for equality.
