Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: Show Time, Channel and What to Watch For

Culture

I’m not a huge fan of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. But because, I firmly believe in the PolicyMic ethos that, “just because you don’t agree with something, doesn’t mean you should ignore it,” I’m still following this event.

In fact, the ideas you most disagree with, are the ones that should be engaged the most fiercely. After all, how can anyone hold a belief intelligently unless that belief has been challenged? We feel arguments are better when they’ve been thought through from both sides, and a conclusion is easier to fight for when you’ve come to it by informed choice, instead of by default.

Cultural critic Arlene Croce famously made waves in 1994 with her New Yorker review, “Discussing the Undiscussable,” of choreographer Bill T Jones’ dance piece, “Still/Here,” based on the loss of Jones’ longtime love, Arne Zane, to AIDS.

Croce audaciously wrote the review without seeing the performance.  Her review was a protest against what she considered to be a cheap inartistic gimmick — making dying people into art — and as a statement against the pervasive PC culture she believed would never accept a true critique of such subject matter.

Yet, it also became the classic example to validate the hard-and-fast, inviolate rule of professional critics, “never review a work you haven’t experienced.” While I don’t believe I need to see Human Centipede, to know that it is an abominable film, it may be worth catching the V.S. show 2012 before drawing further conclusions.

After all, Rhianna and Justin Bieber are performing, and I do love me some RiRi. So, however you feel, here’s all the info you need to watch.
