The man, identified as Brent Troy Bartel, reportedly told a 911 dispatcher he did it because "it's a holy day."
According to the AP, Richland Hills police said the suspect faces charges of "aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
He's currently into custody on a $500,000 bond.
Sargent Nathan Stringer says Brent Troy Bartel called 911 on Wednesday 12-12-12 and said he'd "shed innocent blood."
Officers say they arrived and found that most of the child's back was covered with a large pentagram. They also recovered a box cutter they believe was the weapon used to cut the boy who was immediately taken to a hospital.
