When Nirvana took the stage at Wednesday night's 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy relief concert, the legendary Paul McCartney was the substitute for the late Kurt Cobain. McCartney joined the living members of the iconic 90s rock band, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic, for one of the most memorable performances of the star-studded evening.

McCartney came on stage at the end of the night, closing out the show that had already featured the likes of Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, and the Rolling Stones. After a knock-out rendition of "Helter Skelter" McCartney turned to the crowd saying, "Recently some guys asked me to jam with them. So I showed up like you do, ready to jam. In the middle of it these guys kept saying, 'We haven't played together in years.' Then I finally understood I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion."

The performance was Nirvana's first public performance since the band's final concert 18 years ago. Instead of beginning with an old classic, the group performed a new song, "Cut Me Some Slack" that will undoubtedly get some mega YouTube love in the coming days. Check out the performance below.
