Forget the Second Amendment, the First Amendment is Causing an Uproar After Sandy Hook Massacre

Culture

As pundits from all over the political spectrum discuss the Second Amendment in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the horrific Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy is now also triggering a debate over the First Amendment.

On Monday night, President Obama gave a speech at the vigil for the victims of the attack. And, since the president's speech pre-empted NBC's Sunday Night Football, a series of Twitter trolls — reportedly led by Bradley Patterson, a North Alabama football player — tweeted racist remarks about Obama.

As a result, UNA Athletic Director Mark Linder quickly responded, clarifying on his Twitter account that the university did not condone Patterson's tweet, and that he was "no longer a member of the team."

Weigh In: Were Patterson's First Amendment rights violated with this action?
