House to SCOTUS: Gay People "Too Powerful" For Equal Rights

Impact

A congressional report commissioned by the House in order to persuade the Supreme Court of upholding the Defense of Marriage Act has been released — according to ThinkProgress

The report, made by conservative lawyer Paul Clement, and paid for by American taxpayers, seeks to persuade SCOTUS that:

Gays and lesbians are one of the most influential, best connected, best-funded, and best organized interest groups in modern politics, and have attained more legislative victories, political power, and popular favor in less time than virtually any other group in American history.

The report contends that only groups that "need the special intervention of the courts" should get it, Otherwise, it says, "[these] issues should be left for the democratic process," adding that "the political strength of gays and lesbians in the political process should be outcome determinative here."
