Geraldo Rivera Has His Eyes On New Jersey Senate Seat

Fox News correspondent, television and radio personality Geraldo Rivera will pursue his candidacy for Senate in the midterm 2014 election. Rivera announced on his radio show Thursday afternoon his interest in the New Jersey senate seat. Based on his experience and versatile career, Rivera may have strong leverage to secure the open senate position. 

Rivera took to his daily radio show to discuss the election. His decision was certainly well informed as he outlined his detailed platform.

“Fasten your seat belt, I am and have been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker in New Jersey … I figure, at my age, if I’m going to do it, I’ve got to do it,” Rivera said.

Rivera reconfirmed his candidacy when he appeared this morning on Fox News’ Fox & Friends. Rivera highlighted his stances on the controversial issues that he will advocate for in his future campaign.

“Remember, I believe in immigration reform, I believe in gay rights and gay marriage, I believe in choice … so you have to take my fiscal positions on being a Republican who believes that we have to bail out future generations rather than in-debt future generations with some of these social policies that aren’t in sync with much of traditional GOP politics.”

Rivera will be going after incumbent senator Bob Menendez’s (D) seat. Menendez is currently faced with an alleged underage prostitution scandal. The senator made frequent trips to the Dominican Republic in which he may have engaged in sexual relations with minors. With that in mind, Menendez may not be a viable candidate for re-election.

Although Rivera will be running on the GOP ticket, he may appeal to bipartisan voters. His liberal stance on social issues may help him amass a following that can rival Newark mayor Cory Booker's (D). Rivera is also a prominent figure in the Latino community. He is a senior columnist for Fox News Latino, so he has a fair opportunity to appeal to that significant demographic in the state of New Jersey. So far no other strong GOP member has come forward at the possibility of challenging Geraldo. For now, Rivera has a good shot, we can look forward to future updates along his campaign trail.
