Marco Rubio State Of the Union 2013 Response Will Be Historic: The First to Be in Both English and Spanish

Impact

Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) will give the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night — both in English and Spanish.

According to the Miami Herald, it's the first time a SOTU response will be given in two languages and by the same person.

"I'm honored to have this opportunity to discuss how limited government and free enterprise have helped make my family's dreams come true in America," Rubio said. He'll give the English-language rebuttal live (the Spanish-language one will be pre-recorded).

Rubio's SOTU response in Spanish is obviously an attempt to lure the elusive Hispanic voters who helped Obama beat Romney in 2012. But the young Florida senator, rumored to have presidential aspirations himself, will also try to court the white middle class by highlighting the American Dream story of his working class Cuban-born parents who fled Communism to eventually raise a U.S. senator and perhaps someday the first Hispanic American president of the United States.
