SOTU Address Says 34,000 Soldiers Back From Afghanistan Within a Year

Impact

On Tuesday night at 9 pm EST, President Obama will deliver his State of the Union Speech. Politico has learned from a source familiar with the speech that Obama will announce the return of 34,000 U.S. soldiers from Afghanistan. Currently there are approximately 66,000 U.S. troops in the Central Asian country, and a total of 100,000 foreign soldiers.

The U.S. has been at war in Afghanistan since since October 2001, and it is the longest war in American history. Originally, the Obama administration said that all U.S. forces would be withdrawn from Afghanistan by 2014, but it appears the administration has been lobbying the government of Hamid Karzai to stay in the country longer

Although Obama and his supporters have repeatedly said he is winding down the war, there are currently more troops in the Afghanistan than when the president took office.
