Miley Cyrus' Failed Occupy Wall Street Endorsement

Impact

For Occupy Wall Street, it is anything but a party in the USA.

Recently, singer Miley Cyrus released a new single entitled “Don’t Give Up: It’s A Liberty Walk!,” where she endorses the Occupy movement. While “Liberty Walk” encourages protesters to never give up the fight, leaders from the Occupy movement see it as nothing more than an “empty gesture." I would agree; the video is nothing more than trivialization of the movement.

Cyrus, recently named by L Magazine as "pop music's undisputed worst singer" – is without a doubt a member of the 1%, raking in over $15 million last year alone. Though she is showing her support through her “craft,” members of the movement argue she is all talk and no action.

Priscilla Grim, co-editor of The Occupied Wall Street Journal, said of the video, “I double dog dare [her] to fight on the front line of economic civil rights at LA City Hall," adding, "Revolutionaries occupy, Ms. Cyrus."

An influential leader in the Occupy movement wants less talk and more action from Cyrus, telling TMZ the singer's recent music video in "support" of the Occupy movement is lacking.

While a number of other celebrities have endorsed the movement, including Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon, critics find Miley’s “Liberty Walk” video hypocritical and accuse her of having “a refractory agenda.”

However, Cyrus at least found one ally in the most unexpected place - Rolling Stone. Calling the video "a bold move," they praised Cyrus for "reaching out to an audience who are likely to be either apolitical or outright hostile to her message."

Just another day and another trivialization of Occupy Wall Street. Well done, Miley.
