Oscars Red Carpet 2013: What Will the Stars Wear?

Culture

Glitz and glamour are key elements of — and hands-down my favorite part of — the Oscars. The gowns, jewelry and accessories have a special allure for folks like me, who can only dream of throwing on our old Oscar de la Renta and hitting the town in a fabulous updo and killer cat eyes. That allure is extra special when it's 80 degrees in L.A. and still frosty here in NYC.

My all-time favorite Academy Awards look has to be Cameron Diaz, who looked positively ethereal in her gold-encrusted Oscar de la Renta (hmmm..can you tell? Here's my fave) gown in 2010. (Read about all my picks for hot looks — and major misses — for the 2010 Oscars here.)

What will the stars wear this year? I haven't narrowed it down to designers yet, but I have a few basic predictions when it comes to cut and color. I think we'll see Jessica Chastain in a classic shape with a bold primary color, since that seems to be her M.O. and she does very well in them, given her fair skin and gorgeous red hair. Anne Hathaway has been rocking tons of streamlined black and white lately — perhaps playing off her own new edgy look — so I'm guessing she'll stick with that motif. Jennifer Lawrence is more of a mixed bag for me when it comes to color, as I can't quite figure out her style yet; but since she's the new face of Dior I think we can safely assume she'll be donning a frock by that designer. And Kerry Washington? Also a toss-up, I think, partly because she takes some risks when it comes to the red carpet. Whether it's the color, cut or even a cut-out, I predict there will be something bold and edgy about her dress.
