5 Books We Can't Wait to See On Screen in 2013

Culture

1. Catching Fire:

After the stunning success of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games last year, fans are chomping at the bit to see the second book in the trilogy on the big screen. The second film is set to release in November. In this screen adaption, Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, and Katniss, played by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, complete their victory tour for the 74th Annual Hunger Games. If Catching Fire is anything like the The Hunger Games, it will be a box office smash. No doubt fans are already planning on camping outside theatres upon its release.

2. Carrie:

Stephen King's Carrie has already been turned into a big screen sensation once in 1976, starring Sissy Spacek as the title character. The movie was a critical smash, and the remake is set to release this October. The book is about an awkward girl with telekinetic powers, who seeks revenge on her classmates. The remake will be amazing for two reasons: Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore. Also, Kimberly Pierce is directing. Moretz plays Carrie and Moore her mother, and with these two dynamic actresses, this remake should be riveting.

3. The Host:

The Host is Stephanie Meyer's follow-up to the Twilight series. The book is about a parasitic alien soul that is injected into a girl named Melanie Stryder, with the mission of taking over the world. While this new series doesn't appear to resemble Twilight, it will feed her fans with more fantasy fiction. In the book, the alien host actually works to aid humanity - what an ingenious concept! The movie stars Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, and Max Irons, to name just a few, and is set for a March release.

4. Ender's Game:

Ender's Game was written by Orson Scott Card in 1985. Now, in 2013, it is finally being made into a movie. The book is about the aftermath of a gruesome alien war. In the story, set seventy years after that conflict, an exceptionally gifted child is sent to military school in space to prepare for a future alien invasion. The movie is to be released in November and will star Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, and Viola Davis. The cast is decorated and the movie should be exciting, after having been updated for a 2013 audience.

5. Safe Haven:

Each year seems to bring a new Nicholas Sparks book to the screen. But after 2004's The Notebook, other Sparks screen adaptations have been lackluster. Safe Haven is no exception. The book is about a woman with a dark past who comes to live in a small North Carolina town with the intention of not growing close to anyone. But as if by magic, she falls in love with a local widower. The movie stars Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel and was released on Valentine's Day. How timely ... and what a shocking coincidence. Of the five books being adapted for the screen and released this year, this looks to be the least exciting.
