Oscar Best Makeup and Hairstyling: You Shall Not Pass Up The Hobbit

Culture

The Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling traditionally has only 3 nominees. This year, the nominees are:

Les Miserables

Hitchcock

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This will be a cinch for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. For one, look at all that amazing facial hair in the picture. Second, nothing is more epic than Gandalf's white flowing beard and his hair could be on your average Pantene or L'Oreal commercial. Yes, Gandalf, your hair is worth it (The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, that is).

More seriously, though, all three previous Lord of the Rings films won this category, and the aesthetic of The Hobbit is similar to those films. Hitchcock has not won any big prizes in the major award ceremonies. Les Miserables is probably there to fill up space; the characters in that movie are very presentable, but I just don't see how the characters would require out-of-the-box makeup and hairstyling. Finally, it seems that past 2006, the award has gone to a film that is dramatically different from the previous year's winner. The Iron Lady won last year, and I can't think of any movie that is a sharper contrast to that than The Hobbit.
